Why Trying to Serve Everyone is Killing Your Growth (And What to Do Instead)

A few years ago, I was stuck. My business wasn’t growing, and I couldn’t figure out why. I was bending over backward to serve every client who came my way.

If someone asked, "Can you do this?" my answer was always, "Of course!" I thought saying yes to everyone would lead to more money and more success.

But instead, I felt drained, underpaid, and like I was running on a hamster wheel going nowhere.

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way: trying to serve everyone isn’t just exhausting—it’s killing your growth.

Let me explain why, and how focusing on the right clients can change everything.

The Hidden Cost of Serving Everyone

Back then, I thought more clients meant more income. But what I didn’t realize was that not all clients are created equal. Some clients took forever to pay.

Others asked for endless revisions or treated me like I was on-call 24/7. They weren’t just costing me money—they were costing me peace of mind.

Have you ever had a client where just seeing their name pop up made your stomach drop?

Yeah, me too. That’s when I realized: not every client is a good client.

Trying to serve everyone left me overworked and underpaid, and my business wasn’t growing because I was too busy juggling the wrong people.

The Turning Point: Finding My Sweet Spot

One day, I stumbled across an idea in The Pumpkin Plan that changed everything: prune your clients.

Just like a farmer cuts away unhealthy pumpkins to let the best ones thrive, I needed to let go of the clients who drained my energy and focus on the ones who truly valued my work.

I sat down and looked at my client list. I asked myself:

  • Who pays on time and doesn’t argue about my prices?

  • Who is a joy to work with?

  • Who gets the most value from what I offer?

The answers were eye-opening. It became clear who my “Sweet Spot” clients were—the ones who made my business not just profitable, but enjoyable.

When I focused on serving those clients, everything changed.

I was able to charge higher rates, deliver better results, and still have time left over for my family.

How You Can Start Growing Smarter, Not Harder

If you’re tired of spinning your wheels, I encourage you to take a good, hard look at your client list. Who are your Sweet Spot clients

Who lights you up and makes your work feel meaningful?

And who are the ones draining your energy for little to no return?

What I realized was when I focused on the right clients, my business grew  faster, my income doubled, and my stress decreased. You don’t need to work harder—you need to work smarter.

That means letting go of the clients who don’t align with your goals and doubling down on the ones who do.

I get it...

I know how hard it is to let go. It feels scary, like you’re giving up income or opportunities.

But trust me when I say: pruning is not a loss—it’s a step toward growth.
